We have featured some of Chris and Andrea Mullineux's table wines, but this is our first crack at their extremely rare and highly allocated Olerasay 2° Straw Wine–100% old-vine Chenin Blanc sourced from vines that are planted in a combination of stony schist and decomposed granite. The grapes are picked late and dried on straw mats to concentrate the sugar must before pressing the wine. Each vintage, since 2008, The Mullineauxs hold back a few barrels and blend in a solera style fashion. This offering is from barrels which have been fractionally blended from 2008 through 2019. This is an ultimate multi-vintage that adds infinite layers of complexity and depth. This dessert wine weighs in at 8.5% abv with an unthinkable residual count of 331 grams/liter of residual sugar. These numbers are deceiving since the wine doesn't come off that sweet and the richness suggests a higher alcohol level.
If you have trouble putting down a Hungarian Tokaji Aszu or top-tier Sauternes then this is the nectar you should run for. Vinous Media contributor and correspondent for South Africa, Neal Martin considers the Olerasay sheer perfection, backing it up with a recent 100-point score! This golden elixir dazzles the senses from start to finish with primary notes of dried peach, apricot, blood orange, honey, marmalade, and savory nuttiness that you will find from Oloroso Sherries. Despite its high residual sugar level, the wine dances on the palate with a stream of acidity that will make your mouth water with just one whiff. Seekers of the rare and exotic will not be able to put the glass down.
