WHERE IT GROWS
Anselmo Mendes’ Alvarinho grapes are grown in the lush, green hills of Monção e Melgaço, the prestigious sub-region of Portugal’s famed Vinho Verde. Situated along the Minho River at low altitudes, vineyards here have deep, mineral rich soils and a temperate microclimate that’s protected by the surrounding mountains, allowing the perfect amount of the cool Atlantic’s breeze to counter balance the region’s warm sunshine.
WHO MADE IT
Anselmo Mendes, a.k.a. ‘Mr. Alvarinho’ is a local legend in Monção. With his own roots originating deep in the region’s vineyards, he’s become the modern voice of Alvarinho. Mendes marries tradition with flair, crafting wines that sing with personality and precision. Renowned for unlocking Alvarinho’s full potential, his wines are expressive, precise and 100% authentic to its region.
HOW IT’S MADE
Hand-harvested at dawn, grapes are swiftly destemmed and undergo a brief skin maceration to unlock their aromatic intensity. Soon afterwards, the grapes are gently pressed and undergo a slow, cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks at approximately 54°F. The wine is then aged for three months on its lees with regular bâtonnage, adding texture and a layered complexity that captures the essence of Monção’s terroir.
WHAT IT TASTES LIKE
Bursting with zesty citrus, juicy peach, and floral aromatics, this Alvarinho dazzles with vibrant acidity and is balanced by a creamy, mineral-driven finish. Crisp yet textured, there’s a delightful interplay of tropical fruit, saline notes, and subtle spice. Refreshing, and sophisticated, perfect for pairing with fresh, simply prepared seafood or simply savoring solo on its own.
