2022 Dominio de Pingus "Flor de Pingus", Ribera del Duero
Dominio de Pingus is considered the most important Spanish wine of the modern era. It has the dubious distinction of being Spain’s first “cult wine” fetching prices that have surpassed the legendary icon, Vega Sicilia’ Unico and Reserva Especiale.
Pingus joins the ranks of the world's most coveted wines in the world including Coche Dury's Corton-Charlemagne, Ch. Rayas, and Giacomo Conterno's "Monfortino". With prestige comes a hefty price tag and Pingus has hit the stratosphere based on global demands. Hotly sought-after wines are priced accordingly, and Pingus has skyrocketed in price. The current 2021 release averages north of $1,200.00 per bottle.
Thankfully, proprietor and winemaker, Peter Sisseck had the foresight to create a second wine to express his vision of the finest Tempranillo grown in all of Spain at a more affordable price. "Flor de Pingus" was launched in 1995, and by 2005, a hundred percent of the fruit was biodynamically farmed. A major replanting project has been executed using a massale selection of old-clone parcels.
Insiders would consider "Flor de Pingus" to be the finest Spanish wine in the price/quality category. The newly released 2022 is an evocative expression of Tempranillo purity and terroir.
