2021 Mönchof, Estate Riesling

The Mönchhof, also known as the "Monks House" or "Monks Court," was once owned by the Cistercian Abbey at Himmerod. It is one of the oldest wine estates in the Mosel valley with ownership documents dating back to 1177. The monks constructed the vaulted cellars, still in use today, three centuries before completing the estate manor in 1509. The Eymael family acquired the estate from Napoleon at a Paris auction in 1804. In 2016, Robert Eymael, the sixth-generation family member, sold the winery to an investor. Since then, cellar and vineyard master Philippe Conzen has been managing the estate.

The Mönchhof's esteemed vineyards include the steep Ürzig Würzgarten, Erden Treppchen, and a significant holding in the renowned Erden Prälat vineyard. These vineyards, planted entirely with Riesling on their original rootstocks, have a rich history with vines up to 120 years old. Archeological excavations in the Erden Treppchen vineyard uncovered one of the oldest and largest wine presses north of the Alps, indicating that viticulture in Ürzig and Erden dates back over 2000 years to Roman times.

The grapes were hand harvested over several selective pickings. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks for 3 months on the lees to best preserve the purity of fruit character before bottling.

This wine has a youthful, fresh nose led by notes of white peach flesh, ripe green apple, lemon pith, green tropical fruit skin, lime blossoms, a touch of petrol, honeysuckle, and wet slate. The palate is a touch off-dry with detectable residual sugar, which is offset by very high, citrusy acidity. The fruits on the palate confirm the nose with flavors of green peach, green apple, lime zest, honey, petrol, and crushed slate. Enjoy this with simple white fish, spicy food or by the glass in the sunshine.
