In the hills around Barolo village, the Scarzello family began making wine in the mid-20th century, initially selling grapes and bulk Dolcetto and Nebbiolo to local growers and larger estates from their modest 5-hectare property. They started bottling their own wines in the 1970s, with their first Barolo released in 1978, marking a shift to a dedicated estate approach. Today, third-generation winemaker Federico Scarzello leads the winery, focusing on traditional methods across key vineyards like Sarmassa and Terlo—long fermentations, aging in large Slavonian oak botti, and minimal intervention to let the calcareous marl soils shine through.
The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo draws from high-elevation Nebbiolo plots, including declassified fruit from sites like Sarmassa and neighboring hills such as Madonna di Como. Fermented in concrete with 20-25 days on skins, it sees 6-8 months in large oak before bottling, unfiltered. This approach yields a refined, accessible Nebbiolo with notes of wild strawberry, plum, and herbs, backed by bright acidity and fine tannins—offering a clear window into the estate's Barolo style without the extended aging.
Why You'll Love It
Elegant fruit from Barolo village slopes like (declassified) Sarmassa delivers classic Nebbiolo finesse in a more affordable and approachable form.
Traditional winemaking with long macerations and neutral oak emphasizes site purity over extraction.
