2024 Francis Blanchet, Pouilly-Fumé "Calcite"

The exquisite Sauvignon Blancs of Domaine Blanchet are not new to most of you; this bastion of traditional Pouilly-Fumé with over three centuries of winemaking history is a long-standing A-team producer at SommSelect. Interestingly, their estate vines, following DNA testing, have proved to be some of the oldest existing clones of Sauvignon Blanc—the true “mother,” antique biotypes of Loire Sauvignon.

Francis recognizes that his small-production Pouilly-Fumé is highly sought-after (his front door is surely imprinted by the knuckles of a thousand importers), so you'd expect one of two outcomes: an increase in production or ramped-up prices. Some producers get away with both, but Francis hasn't done either.

These ancient, limestone-heavy soils in the hands of Blanchet expertise create Pouilly-Fumé magic. Grapes are pressed gently in a horizontal, pneumatic press, with juice fed to tanks via gravity. Juice is then fermented on indigenous yeasts and aged in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks, to preserve Sauvignon Blanc's naturally vibrant aromas and flavors.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT

  • Artisan Collectibility: This is a traditionally crafted, extremely affordable, must-have 'collectible' for anyone who admires terroir, purity, and the value of a dollar. And as our team learned firsthand when we visited Blanchet, these wines really can age; having tasted decades-old back vintages of Blanchet that are still singing, we can say without hesitation that this is one of the greatest white wine values on the market.

  • Defines The Region: Putting your nose in the glass is one of the cool moments in wine where you can nail the grape and place before even tasting. That's Blanchet for you: A wine whose gorgeous citrusy, flinty, chalky aromas consistently and perfectly define an entire region.

  • Ironclad VALUE: Three centuries of family history. Original Loire Sauvignon rootstock. Classic Kimmeridgian terroir. At $27 on six bottles. What tariffs? What inflation?

HOW TO SERVE IT

  • 45°F in white wine stems. This gorgeously pure and bright 100% Sauvignon Blanc shows a brilliant bouquet of lemon zest, nectarine, jasmine tea, and quince. The high percentage of silex in the terroir shows through with a distinct flinty note that adds complexity.

  • Serve as an aperitif with fresh shellfish (oysters on the half shell) or roasted chicken with fresh tarragon.

  • Drink now through 2030. Grab what you can, while you can, because we received far less than usual!
