2022 Bodegas Peique, "Tesín de la Campana", Bierzo DO

After decades of relative obscurity, the Bierzo sub-zone—tucked away at the northwestern edge of Castilla y León—is undergoing a profound vinous rebirth as a premier source for world-class Mencía. It is this newfound status as a bastion for Spain’s most in-demand fine wines that compelled us to petition our importer for a custom shipment of the 2022 Bodegas Peique “Tesín de la Campana”.

Sourced from a microscopic single site of 90+ year-old Mencía vines, only 73 cases were produced for the entire world. We’ve secured seven of them as a nationwide exclusive for our SommSelect faithful. This is a high-altitude "tour de force" that will leave even the most seasoned collectors of Grand Cru Burgundy or Hermitage breathless. While the SRP sits at $85, we are offering this rarity at $55 on bottle one, with further discounts on four bottles or more.

The Peique story is one of obsessive detail, beginning with grandfathers Ramón Valle and Ramón Peique, who hand-planted these vineyards in the early 20th century. Today, Jorge Peique crafts this wine with the same meticulous hand-harvesting and traditional foot-treading taught to him as a child. This specific 2022 vintage earned a glowing 94+ point review from Luis Gutiérrez of The Wine Advocate, who noted its remarkable elegance and depth. It is a profound expression of Bierzo’s "Cru" potential, fermented with 100% whole bunches and aged for a year in seasoned French oak to preserve its soul.

In the glass, the wine is a hauntingly beautiful study in Mencía. After an hour’s decant, it erupts with a vivid bouquet of crushed slate, wild violets, and black cherry, underscored by a savory streak of olive tapenade and cracked pepper. The palate is electric—balancing the muscularity of a Northern Rhône Syrah with the ethereal, silk-thread texture of old-vine Burgundy. It possesses a distinctive Atlantic freshness and a saline, mineral-driven finish that reminds you why this region is often called "Spain’s answer to Burgundy."

This is more than just a bottle; it is a time capsule of 90-year-old viticulture and a testament to the Peique family’s generational mastery. “Tesín de la Campana” is a transformative and transparent experience. With only seven cases available, this is a fleeting opportunity to secure a wine that will cellar handsomely for the next decade.

 ¡Viva España!

Critical Acclaim:

94+ Points,  Wine Advocate:

  • “The 2022 Tesín de la Campana is the second year for this wine. It is produced with the grapes from an old plot that is 70% north-facing on clay-rich soils and the rest south-facing on sandier soils. It fermented with full clusters, 100% in this case, in used open-top 500-liter oak barrels, where the wine later matured for one year. This year it's riper, reflected by the 13.5% alcohol, 3.58 pH and 5.1 grams of acidity. But it's still elegant and balanced, with depth and complexity. It opened up nicely in the glass to floral aromas, becoming more and more focused, with good depth and mid-palate.” -  Luis Gutiérrez, WA
