2013 Bava, Barolo Cru "Scarrone", Castiglione Falleto

Library releases like this don’t come around often. The 2013 Bava Barolo “Scarrone” is a decade-old Cru bottling sourced directly from the estate—impeccably cellared, with pristine provenance. While the market is flooded with youthful 2020s and 2021s, seasoned collectors know: the time to drink is now for the 2010 and 2013 vintages—two of the finest in recent memory.

After tasting a bottle last week, we moved fast to secure the final four cases. This is a must-have for anyone who appreciates traditionally made Barolo with some age behind it. The 2013s are entering their prime, and after a 60–90 minute decant, this wine reveals everything we love about mature Nebbiolo.

This is a sleeper hit—an under-the-radar gem that punches well above its price point. The importer has done the aging for you, and unlike other 2013 Cru Barolos that have crept past $100, this one remains a steal. Antonio Galloni rated the vintage 97 points, and this bottle delivers all the hallmarks: dried cherry, tar, black licorice, and savory leather, with woodsy mushroom and umami notes on the palate.

Proper aeration and a serving temp of 55–60°F unlock its full complexity. There’s plenty of life left in this wine, and it’s built to evolve. Take advantage of multi-bottle pricing—you’ll want to track its journey over the next few years.

Founded over a century ago in Cocconato, Piedmont, Bava Winery is a family-run estate now in its sixth generation, known for its meticulous craftsmanship and deep-rooted commitment to tradition. The Bava family has cultivated vineyards across Langhe and Monferrato, producing wines that reflect the elegance and diversity of Piedmont’s terroir. Their philosophy centers on sustainable viticulture, minimal intervention, and a reverence for the land—resulting in wines that are both expressive and age-worthy. From their benchmark Barberas to structured Nebbiolos, Bava’s portfolio is a masterclass in regional authenticity.

The Scarrone vineyard, located in the heart of Castiglione Falletto, is one of Barolo’s most prized crus. With its calcareous clay soils and ideal elevation, Scarrone yields Nebbiolo of remarkable depth and finesse. The 2013 vintage of Bava’s Cru Scarrone Barolo is a testament to this site’s pedigree—showcasing the winery’s traditional approach with extended aging and restrained winemaking. It’s a wine that speaks fluently of its origin, offering layers of dried cherry, tar, and savory earthiness that only time and terroir can deliver.

Molte Graze!
