Tasting California Chardonnay these days is a bit like hitting a moving target, given that some producers have moved away from the heavy oak and butter iterations of the 1990s and early aughts. That said, much of what you encounter is similar to this version from Sonoma Valley that attempts to walk a fine line between old-school oak-spice and cream, and fresh, zippy fruit and acid. The wine exhibits a medium golden-yellow core with light golden hues on the rim. Concentration of color is medium. Viscosity is medium. The nose is youthful and fruit-driven, with aromas of ripe yellow apple, Bosc pear, white peach, yellow flowers, lemon cream, baking spice, and a hint of vanilla. The wine is dry and medium in body. The palate exhibits flavors of yellow apple, pear, white peach, preserved lemon, white flowers, citrus fruits, cream and faint hints of baking spices. The finish is soft, with medium-low acid and minerality.
