2020 Vincent Girardin, Puligny-Montrachet, 1er Cru "Champs Gains"

Pundits and collectors alike have praised Vincent Girardin’s wines for their elegance, complexity, and balance. Through meticulous winemaking techniques, Girardin’s Chardonnays are renowned for their terroir-driven complexity. The winery owns and cultivates vineyards in some of the most prestigious appellations in Burgundy, including Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Volnay.

When Vincent Girardin founded his eponymous winery in the early 1980s, he was often referred to as a “newcomer” to the hallowed winemaking of Burgundy, given that neighboring maisons had been producing wines for centuries. The truth, however, is more nuanced. Vincent is a descendant of a family of vintners who have been winegrowers since the 17th century. For Vincent, founding his own winery was a chance to apply his philosophy, but with centuries of family know-how in his back pocket. The wines quickly became some of the most sought-after and respected examples from the region, showing purity and soft-spoken power.

Les Champs Gains is only one vineyard away from the Grand Cru Chevalier-Montrachet, and is noted for its focused minerality and higher elevation, delivering an unrivaled precision, focus and mineral-driven expression of Côte de Beaune Chardonnay that is built to last. Sourced from 45-year-old-vines.

92 Points, Wine Advocate:
" ... wafts from the glass with aromas of crisp green apple, freshly baked bread and white flowers, along with subtle hints of green mango and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and perfumed, it's a fleshy, elegant wine that concludes with a saline finish."
