What's inside:
2022 Fragas do Lecer "Fraga do Corvo" Godello- The “Fraga do Corvo,” or “Murder of Crows” Blanco is an assertive and complex wine, with notes of yellow apple, green melon, lime leaf, wet herbs, and crushed stones. It is medium-plus in body, with a combination of minerality and viscosity that brings white Burgundy to mind. Fresh seafood is the most obvious pairing but this wine also stands up to a variety of poultry dishes, we're thinking of cajun style blackened chicken!
2022 Talley Vineyards, San Luis Obispo Coast, Estate Chardonnay- This wine is born from the picturesque San Luis Obispo Coast, where Talley Vineyards' estate vineyards thrive under the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean. It offers a bouquet of citrus zest, orange blossom, and fresh bread, followed by flavors of lemon curd, marcona almonds, and dried pineapple. Its bright acidity and creamy texture make it both refreshing and sophisticated. Serve it chilled with grilled salmon or scallops, and lighter meats such as roasted chicken or pork.
2020 Domaine de la Madone, Beaujolais Villages "Le Perréon - Bio"- If you want a red light enough to enjoy in the summer heat but serious enough to stand up to the flavors of your burgers and brats, Beaujolais should be near the top of your list. This “basic” Beaujolais has all the silky fruit, granitic minerality, and floral fun of a top tier Fleurie, but from an overlooked terroir outside the “Cru” designation. Give it a quick decant and and you’ll be treated to a rush of wild raspberries, black currants, cherry blossoms, dried rose petals, black tea, damp earth, and tell-tale granitic minerality.
2019 Vaeni, Naoussa Xinomavro "Grande Reserve"- If you have not yet become acquainted with Xinomavro, let us eagerly introduce you! Widely considered the most important indigenous red grape in Greece, these wines continue to offer outrageous complexity for their price. Its tannic structure, color, and expressive perfume have prompted many to compare it to Italy’s Nebbiolo, and we wouldn’t disagree, although we don't find it quite as tannic (or alcoholic) as Nebbiolo. With aromas of rose petals, warm spices, orange peel, and tobacco melding with the bright fruit, it is an elegant red that melds sweet and savory flavors seamlessly.
2018 Passágem, Douro "Reserva" Red- Longtime SommSelect Faithful have heard this rant many times before: most of the wine-loving public is asleep at the wheel when it comes to the dry reds of Portugal’s Douro Valley. This Touriga Nacional dominant blend opens with black raspberry, cassis, currants and plum, then gives way to savory elements of dusty earth, wild herbs, leather, and tobacco. Reminiscent of Left Bank Bordeaux, but with a wild side—a pleasing touch of earthy rusticity that begs to be tamed by red meat with some char.
2019 Giannecchini Family Vineyards, Old Vine Zinfandel, Mendocino County- Big bold barbecue flavors call for big, bold wines and in that regard, Zinfandel delivers. Around 114 years ago, the Giannecchini family planted their Zinfandel vineyard in the Talmage Bench gravels of Mendocino County- now recognized as perfect Zin terroir. This Zinfandel has absolutely everything you want: penetrating, bold boysenberry and poached cherry fruit, lilting floral aromas, and spicy complexity. And as it is a wine produced without herbicides, insecticides, or inorganic fertilizer, with all weeding done by sheep, you can feel good about putting it in your body.
