Domaine Anne et Hervé Sigaut, Chambolle-Musigny, 1er Cru Les Noirots (375ml)

Halfway between Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée, lies the celebrated village of Chambolle-Musigny. One of the most distinguished of the Côte de Nuits villages, Chambolle-Musigny has the extraordinary Grand Crus, Bonnes Mares and Musigny. Situated roughly 50 feet below Bonnes Mares, today’s ‘Les Noirots’ Premier Cru is advantageously located in the sweet spot of the famous village’s vineyards. The parcel’s vines are an average of 45 years of age and are rooted in clay and limestone soils with scattered stones. Farmed Lutte raisonée, horse-plowed and treated organically following flowering, the fruit enjoys incredibly pedigreed terroir and immense concentration thanks to the mature vines and low yielding 2013 vintage.

Hervé and Anne Sigaut have been crafting fine wines from their treasured parcels in Chambolle-Musigny since taking the reigns from Maurice Sigaut in 1990. The Sigauts have been passionate vignerons and winemakers for generations, but the secret is finally out. With ever-increasing demand, their wines have become quite allocated and continue to represent some of the purest translations of the village’s unique terroir thanks to thoughtful winemaking, which is predominantly dictated by the lunar calendar, as well as the winning combination of modern facilities utilized with traditional practices. Hervé touches the wine as little as possible during the winemaking process and everything is moved via gravity. Following harvest, the fruit undergoes a 7-day cold maceration followed by a 3-week fermentation. The wine is aged in only 30% new French oak, which retains the immense elegance of Chambolle-Musigny as well as the pure voice of terroir.

The 2013 ‘Les Noirots’ Chambolle-Musigny displays a highly reflective ruby red core with a touch of light garnet glints on the rim. Pure and classic aromatics of wild raspberry, strawberry, black plum and a kiss of goji berry are delicately knitted together with complex savory notes of wet tea leaf, fresh rose petals, wet forest, a hint of wet stone and that overarching classic Burgundian perfume that makes you salivate the moment you place your nose in the glass. Medium-plus in body, beautiful richness and concentration of pristine fruit, a touch of grape stems and finely crushed stones dance across the palate and are bolstered by firmness and tension that is wrapped in feminine softness and elegance. However charming and approachable this wine is in its youth, we would highly advise keeping your paws off at least one bottle for another 2-3 years - although we anticipate this wine’s magnificent peak to fall between 2020 and 2025. If you do choose to enjoy this beauty in her youth, pull the cork 2-3 hours ahead and serve at 60-65 degrees in a Burgundy stem. For those of you pressed for time, you can decant for 20-30 minutes prior. Pair with Roast Duck over this Parsnip Puree for a meal that will transcend the greatest of expectations.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
