Aurélien Verdet, Vosne-Romanée, Premier Cru - Les Beaux Monts

The golden slopes of Vosne-Romanée are Mecca for Burgundy enthusiasts, who are perpetually on a pilgrimage to seek out the best wines from its unique soils. “Les Beaux Monts,” is not just another premier cru; it shares hallowed ground with some of the biggest names of the appellation. Adjacent to the grand cru of Échezeaux to the west, “Les Beaux Monts,” is only separated from the grand cru of Richebourg to the southeast by the tiny, “Aux Brulées,” and is a short nine-iron-drive away from Romanée-Conti. Blessed with limestone, clay and ample marl, the soil just doesn’t get much better in the Côte de Nuits.

All of Domaine Aurélien Verdet’s vineyards are organically farmed and manually harvested. In fact, Aurélien’s father was an early proponent and frontrunner in the organic movement within Burgundy back in the early 70’s. According to Jancis Robinson, “One wouldn’t imagine that fruit coming from such varied sources would find such uniform themes of expression. But that is the case, evidence that this young winemaker knows what he is doing in the field and in the cellar. Aurélien says nothing is done by rote. Everything is done by feel, by taste, by intuition, by the phases of the moon and as the wines from each parcel and from each vintage demand.” As a result, his wines boast a clean expression of every vineyard site that are spot on examples of their appellations, and this wine is no exception. Utilizing indigenous yeasts, Verdet vinifies slowly and gently for thirty days with up to ten days of cold maceration. The wines are aged in very specific French oak with only 33% new oak to allow the character of the varietal and its terroir to truly shine; the oak is barely detectable, as it should be.

This Pinot Noir is an incredibly velveteen example, without edges, that boasts beautiful perfume that the great sites of Vosne is known for. The wine is delicious and an amazing pleasure at the moment, but her real beauty will start to emerge in 5-7 years from now, although it could take fifteen years or more to reach the ultimate peak. For example, most of the wines made in 1985 from this vineyard site are on fire at the moment. The nose of this wine offers dark, brooding, wet florals, red and black fruit along with wet forest floor and wild mushrooms. The perfume on this wine is what only great Burgundy can convey; you know it when you smell, but mere words actually fall short of encapsulating its essence. The palate presents dark strawberry, black cherry cream and black plum that is intertwined with trademark minerality, wet forest floor and a slight truffle flavor. This wine has a lot of body, beautiful texture, seamless tannins and a finish that seems to last for days. Considering its vintage, class and appellation, the 2010 Domaine Aurélien Verdet, Vosne-Romanée, 1er Cru, “Les Beaux Monts,” is a true value that delivers a snapshot of one of the greatest terroirs in the world. My source tells me that the prices on the current vintage are going to be much higher so there will be a significant price raise for upcoming vintages. Again, we were only able to procure 60 bottles of this wine; the offer is first come, first serve.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
