Domaine La Bouissiere, Vacqueyras

Thierry and Gilles Faravel are in charge of this esteemed estate. Their family was selling their grapes for a few decades until they bottled their own wine in 1979. All of their grapes are farmed organically and hand harvested. Their Vacqueyras is a blend of 46% Grenache, 11% Mourvèdre, 43% Syrah, with vines averaging about 35 years of age. Most of the fruit is destemmed (75%), and after fermentation the wine is pressed into a mix of old large barrels and tank to age. To finish, they bottle their wine unfined and unfiltered. The winemaking is as natural as possible, allowing the terroir of the region to speak. Their focus and attention to detail at this property has led them to be considered one of the best estates in the Rhone Valley.

Their 2011 Vacqueyras is dark and opaque with purple hues coming off the rim. The nose in intense and powerful with aromas of fresh boysenberry, black cherry liqueur, purple flowers, underbrush, olive, smoked meat, licorice and dried herbs. The palate full bodied and richly flavored with a perceived sweetness of ripe boysenberry, black cherry and underbrush flavors combined with a perfect amount of acidity bringing freshness to the wine. This red is incredible to drink in its youth, but will blossom into something very special if cellared properly for a decade or so. Ideally quickly decant this wine for air and enjoy at about 60-65 degrees out of a Burgundy stem. If you like wines from the Southern Rhone, or Rhone blends from anywhere, this is one you can’t miss.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
