Jean-Marc Roulot, Meursault, Premier Cru

In 2011, a group of investors led by world-renowned sommelier Robert Bohr, purchased Domaine Rene Manuel, located in Meursault. This is a purchase that included many assets: 40 prized acres of vineyards, a Château, many barrels of top quality Burgundy, and a winery. Jean-Marc Roulot was brought in as a metayage partner for certain parcels. He then went through the cellar, tasted all of the barrels and selected the very best of the 2010 Meursault-Clos des Bouchères-Monopole. He then labeled the wine under his Jean-Marc Roulot Negoce label (pictured above), labeled 1er Cru, without the vineyard name. As I mentioned above from 2011 forward, this single vineyard will be labeled as Domaine Roulot, not the Jean-Marc Roulot label. This change to the Domaine Roulot label in 2011 is because he was in full ownership of the entire process from the vines until the bottling of the wine.

This wine is compact, dense and mineral driven with decades of life ahead of it.  The powerful aromatics show classic Meursault perfume of fresh acacia flowers, white peach, bosc pear, lemon, honey and crushed chalk. The palate is full of texture, with lots of tension driven by the high acidity of the heralded 2010 vintage (considered to be one of the best of this century). Words can't really describe the aromas and flavors of great burgundy, it is something you must experience yourself. This wine will start to show its potential in 3-5 years and continue to evolve for another decade or two, depending on how it is cellared. If drinking this wine in its youth, decant it for several hours before drinking.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
