Jean Noel Gagnard - Chassagne Montrachet Rouge

Chassagne-Montrachet, in Burgundy’s famed Côte de Beaune, is synonymous with unparalleled world-class Chardonnay. However, this charmed village also holds a secret treasure; its charmed slopes are comprised of roughly one-third Pinot Noir.
This noble red grape is blessed with expert guidance in the hands of one of the finest domains (wineries) in Burgundy. Something of an anomaly, Domaine Jean Nöel Gagnard, has one of the few female winemakers of Burgundy at the helm. The flaxen-haired, La Belle Caroline Lestimé lends her respected expertise as well as her namesake to the “L’Estimée” label, which actually means “esteemed lady.” With strict attention to detail and emphasis on terroir, Caroline has rightly garnered worldwide respect for her efforts in this family-run winery.

The entirely hand-harvested grapes of this wine are selected from six small plots, mostly consisting of stony clay soils, and are destemmed prior to fermentation then aged for 18 months in 25% new French Oak.

The wine boasts a dark, ruby red hue with ample concentration thanks to the warm 2009 vintage, which favored reds over whites.  Intense aromas of ripe black cherry, red plum and strawberry, infused with rose, earth and forest floor, evolve into a round, opulent wine that offers soft tannins, making this very approachable.

Excitement and anticipation ensues when it comes to the reds of Chassagne Montrachet as the quality-to-price ratio is always exceptionally high and even more so in the hands of Domaine Jean Nöel Gagnard. This wine is at its peak of drinkability and should show beautifully over the next few years. I’m incredibly proud to offer this selection and we only have a small number of bottles to sell. It won't last long.

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
