Domaine de la Bergerie, Sparkling Chenin Blanc

There are many regions of the Loire Valley, bringing us many different styles of wine. Most of the vineyards were planted long before many of us were on the earth and the roots of these vines have had many decades to drive far into to ground, yielding true “sense of place” and exceptional quality. The sparkling wines of the Loire Valley which are locally known as Fines Bulles (fine bubbles), have become known around the world as some of the greatest values found in all of Europe.

There are a few producers of top quality, and Yves Guegniard is one of them. He runs the esteemed Domaine de la Bergerie, located in the region of Anjou Saumur. They make many different types of wine and all are worth seeking out.

Today we are offering the Crémant de Loire, Non-Vintage (NV). NV means the still wines used to create the sparkling wine can come from many vintages. Crémant is a term that refers to a French sparkling wine made in the traditional method, however, it is grown and produced outside of the Champagne region. The wine is still made in exactly the same fashion, but with less strict aging laws. This particular sparkler is made from 100% organically farmed Chenin Blanc and is one of the most compelling sparkling wines I have tasted from outside Champagne in recent memory.

This Crémant has a light yellow color with fine bubbles filling the glass. The nose holds unique aromatics that first show pureed almonds, beeswax, honey and lemon zest. The palate is harmoniously dry and hold a richness and texture that far exceeds many sparkling wines from the region. This is a Crémant to open for the upcoming Summer days and deserves a place on any fine dining table around the world.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
