Château Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan

No Bordeaux collection is complete without Pape Clément! Savvy collectors lay cases down for a minimum of 10-years before enjoying. The Château has been on a mega-trajectory ever since wine magnate, Bernard Magrez purchased the estate back in 1980. A Robert Parker darling property with a tremendous track record of high-scoring releases that started with the 2000 vintage and still racking up the press with present vintages. Never too far in quality from the prestigious First-Growth Château Haut-Brion, Pape Clément stays with the best of them, including the Top-Growths further north on the Left-Bank.

The wine consistently displays how power and elegance can coexist in the glass. In certain vintages, there’s a higher percentage of Merlot to Cabernet Sauvignon, but the 2015 has is tilted more to Cabernet Sauvignon with 40% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. Sumptuous scents of blackberries, licorice, tar, and graphite set the stage for extraordinary concentration on the palate. Plenty of cassis and blackberry flavors coat the mouth with back notes of chocolate and volcanic ash. The tannins are starting to soften, but do it justice and hold onto the wine for another two years before serving. Poised to cellar gracefully for another 10 to 12 years. Always a true performer for the collection. This is not a resale opportunity but sourced directly from the Château. Mint condition with A+ provenance.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
