Brilliant Mistake, Cabernet Sauvignon

Brilliant Mistake is one of the newest Napa “cult wines”, coming from John and Stacy Reinert. Over years of immersing themselves in Napa culture, dining at the valley's many world-famous restaurants, attending winery events and participating in tastings, and lending helping hands in vineyards and cellars, they established friendships with some of the most renowned vintners, chefs, and locals, affording them insight into the winemaking culture. In 2013, they took the leap and produced their first vintage of Brilliant Mistake, one of which sold out almost immediately.  Little did they know that the newly launched project named Brilliant Mistake had the 'it factor' that would skyrocket it to a stratosphere of cult standing.

Winemaker:  Maayan Koschitzky has amassed an impressive winemaking resume. From the vineyards of Israel to Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle in the Napa Valley, he has worked alongside some of the most renowned winemakers in addition to some of the most coveted terroirs in the world.  In 2014 Maayan began working with Philippe Melka and is currently the Director of Winemaking and partner at Atelier Melka, overseeing an impressive list of clients while making some of the most coveted and award-winning wines available (Dana Estates, Tusk, Brand, Alejandro Bulgheroni to name a few) as well as producing his own brand, La Pelle.  In 2015, Maayan became the winemaker for Brilliant Mistake Wines. Maayan wants to keep the wine close to the land and create wines with a sense of place, which he feels all great wines need.

Vineyard: While the vineyard sources are kept clandestine, it is revealed that the fruit sourced for Brilliant Mistake is coming from the most prestigious vineyards in Rutherford and St Helena.

Winemaking: Napa has seen a remarkable run of above average vintages for the majority of the last 10 years, but 2018 might just be the cherry on top! Perfect conditions existed throughout the growing season and winemakers were able to pick when their desired ripeness showed itself. This 100% Cabernet is  aged 21 months in 65% meticulously chosen, new french oak barrels.

Profile: A bold and powerful wine, deep garnet-purple in color, with bright acidity. Plush textural notes of black cherries, plum, black currants, espresso and mocha are present in the glass. Beautifully structured, with intense tannins and multiple layers leading to an elegant and lengthy finish.

United States

Washington

Columbia Valley

Like many Washington wines, the “Columbia Valley” indication only tells part of the story: Columbia Valley covers a huge swath of Central
Washington, within which are a wide array of smaller AVAs (appellations).

Oregon

Willamette Valley

Oregon’s Willamette Valley has become an elite winegrowing zone in record time. Pioneering vintner David Lett, of The Eyrie Vineyard, planted the first Pinot Noir in the region in 1965, soon to be followed by a cadre of forward-thinking growers who (correctly) saw their wines as America’s answer to French
Burgundies. Today, the Willamette
Valley is indeed compared favorably to Burgundy, Pinot Noir’s spiritual home. And while Pinot Noir accounts for 64% of Oregon’s vineyard plantings, there are cool-climate whites that must not be missed.

California

Santa Barbara

Among the unique features of Santa Barbara County appellations like Ballard Canyon (a sub-zone of the Santa Ynez Valley AVA), is that it has a cool, Pacific-influenced climate juxtaposed with the intense luminosity of a southerly
latitude (the 34th parallel). Ballard Canyon has a more north-south orientation compared to most Santa Barbara AVAs, with soils of sandy
clay/loam and limestone.

California

Paso Robles

Situated at an elevation of 1,600 feet, it is rooted in soils of sandy loam and falls within the Highlands District of the Paso Robles AVA.

New York

North Fork

Wine growers and producers on Long Island’s North Fork have traditionally compared their terroir to that of Bordeaux and have focused on French varieties such as Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
