For more than 150 years and spanning six generations, Henschke has been recognized for its rich winemaking heritage in Eden Valley, Barossa Valley, and the Adelaide Hills. Stephen and Pru Henschke are the current “keepers of the flame”. They’re poised to pass the winery and vineyards to the next generation in better condition than when they inherited them. Their “Hill of Grace” and “Mount Edelstone” are arguably the two oldest single vineyard wines produced in all of Australia. At the “50 Years of Hill of Grace” celebration back in 2008, Decanter’s Magazine’s, Stephen Spurrier tasted every vintage and was struck by how closely Stephen Henschke was emulating his father’s winemaking of the late 1950s and the 60s with minimal intervention techniques. The 2015 is incredibly plush and velvety on the palate with an intense fruit concentration of black plums, red currants, and blackberries. Alluring seasonings of anise, tar, spicecake, violet pastille, and pepper spice add to the sensory experience. The combination of French and American oak (only 33% new) allows the depth of the old-vine fruit to shine through. There’s refinement and elegance at every angle of this old-vine Syrah. This remarkable wine will age effortlessly for two to three decades. The U.S. allocation is extremely limited so grab the current release for your collection before it disappears.
