1995 Perez Pascuas, "Vina Pedrosa" Ribera del Duero Crianza

The brothers Benjamin, Manuel and Adolfo Perez Pascuas established the Bodegas Perez Pascuas in 1980, but their father Mauro actually planted grapes well before that. The bodega was one of the founding group that established the official D.O. in 1982. So, here is a well-established family business dedicated to top quality wines from all estate grapes featuring older vines. At about 2600 feet above sea level, these vines benefit from a wide diurnal temperature range, which preserves the acidity and hence freshness of the wines.

At almost thirty years of age, this "mere" Crianza has held on to the primary dark-toned fruit that is Ribera's calling card in an almost preternatural way. And, while the typical tannic structure of such wines is still evident, there is enough relaxation around the edges that one truly enjoys the beautifully melded flavors of dark fruit and  American oak, especially if accompanied by the lamb rib-chops known locally as "Cordero". or perhaps a fine, aged Manchego cheese.

This is a gorgeous testament to the glory and staying power of fine Tempranillo from the Ribera del Duero. The price, frankly, is risible for the quality.
