Yves & Chantal Contat-Grangé, Premier Cru Le Clos des Loyères

Just a short jaunt off-the-beaten path in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune lies the Maranges appellation, only granted AOC status in 1988, that boasts 100 hectares of Premier Cru vineyards in around 240 hectares of cultivated land. The quality-driven appellation with exceptional terroir has managed to remain something of a hidden secret to the masses and consequently delivers immense value for the divine nectar found in the bottle. An idyllic, rural community, full of gentle rolling vineyards and historic architecture, Maranges is home to Y. et C. Contat-Grangé.

The husband-wife team, Yvon and Chantal, created Contat-Grangé back in 1981 following Yvon’s studies in Beaune for enology and viticulture. They have been farming organically since 1987 and received certification in 2011. Y. et C. Contat-Grangé are dedicated to the credo that great wine is made in the vineyards. Over the years, they have implemented integrated pest management, extensive cordon pruning, debudding and green harvesting to ensure that they produce only the most pristine fruit. As a result, their wines taste pure, unadulterated and pulsating with life and a true sense of place. The grapes, derived from classic limestone over marl soils, are hand harvested and crushed under foot. The wine is fermented with only natural yeasts and is aged for one year in neutral French oak, which allows the terroir a clear voice. If you enjoy red Burgundy but do not appreciate off aromas and are exhausted by the exorbitant prices, this is the wine for you. Floral, pure and packing with lush fruit flavors and mouth-coating richness, this wine is a rarity for the price-to-quality and will prove difficult to merely enjoy only one bottle.

This wine displays a highly concentrated dark ruby core that moves to light pink and garnet reflections on the rim. The powerful and intense nose boasts aromas of ripe, fruit-forward wild berries, strawberry, red and black plum as well as dried black cherries fill the senses over perfumed notes of wet rose petals, rose petal candy, wet herbs, forest floor and a touch of baking spices and oak spice. The nearly full-bodied palate delivers mouth-coating richness and endless layers of generous wild berry fruit followed by a kiss of earth and light spice. This wine is at its peak and will continue to shine over the next 12-18 months. A prime candidate for your holiday feast, serve a few bottles around 60 degrees in Burgundy stems after a 20-minute decant. If you prefer a classic Burgundian meal on a crisp night, prepare this traditional Boeuf Bourguignon for a truly memorable evening. Bon Appetit.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
