A small production, organically farmed, 100% Garganega from 60 year-old vines proves that Soave, at its best, is a wine of complexity and terroir transparency.
Who Made It:
In 1938 Virgilio Mainente purchased a small, ancient building and courtyard, along with some surrounding vineyards, and began the family winery. His son Ugo expanded and updated the winery, and now his sons Marco and Davide are at the helm. They have initiated organic practices throughout the 10 hectare (tiny by Soave standards) estate.
What It Tastes Like:
Served cool in an all-purpose stem the color is bright, straw gold, with hints of silver and green at the rim. Aromas of white peach, nectarine, lime zest, white flowers, cedar, beeswax, and crushed rock are followed by similar flavors of citrus and stone fruits with a medium-bodied texture and a finish that is crisp and loaded with minerals.
Where It Grows:
The Mainente family owns a single vineyard of old (60 plus years) Garganega vines growing on the slopes of Mount Tenda in the heart of the original Soave Classico zone. The total Soave appellation has been greatly expanded over the decades, but good “Classico” like this grows on thin layers of clay top soil over a bedrock of almost pure limestone.
