To understand why Quinta da Cavadinha can produce stellar Port in undeclared vintages, you need to see the vineyard. Located in the heart of the Pinhão Valley, it occupies a dramatic bowl formed by a sharp bend in the river. The terraced vineyards climb precipitously from 180 meters to 440 meters, with southeast and east exposures that capture morning sun while avoiding afternoon scorching.
This unique topography creates a late-ripening microclimate that defines Cavadinha's style. Where other Douro vineyards might struggle in cooler years, Cavadinha's elevation and aspect produce grapes of freshness and complexity. The old vines—which make up an unusually high proportion of the plantings—dig deep into schist soils, yielding tiny amounts of intensely flavored fruit.
The Symington family, who've owned Warre's since 1905, recognized Cavadinha's potential long ago. And in 2013, they knew this vineyard was the pinnacle of their production. While not warm enough for a universal declaration, the conditions at this particular quinta produced Port of exceptional quality. The Symingtons' decision to bottle it as a single-quinta vintage reflects their confidence—and ours, after this blew away our tasting panel. The old dictum holds true: smart collectors buy the producer, not the vintage.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT
Single-Quinta Character: In declared years, Cavadinha fruit disappears into Warre's classic blend. Here you taste the vineyard's pure expression—those distinctive tea-rose and violet notes that emerge from this unique terroir.
The Goldilocks Vintage: 2013's moderate conditions produced Port that's approachable now but built to age. You don't need to cellar this for 20 years to enjoy it—though it will certainly reward patience.
Best USA Price: At $54 on three bottles, this is exceptional value for proper Vintage Port from one of the Douro's premier estates. Declared vintages from Warre's go for twice as much.
HOW TO SERVE IT
-
Serve at 60-64°F. Decant if drinking now to remove any sediment, and allow the wine to open up.
-
Drink now through 2045. While it's already showing beautiful violet and rose notes with dark fruit, Vintage Port from Cavadinha develops “aromas of very fine old burgundy” with age, according to the Symingtons, who know.
-
Perfect with stilton and walnuts (the classic pairing), dark chocolate desserts, or simply sipped by the fire.
