Zanasi, Lambrusco di Sorbara

Lambrusco is the signature frizzante (semi-sparkling) wine of Emilia-Romagna, home of food capitals such as Modena, Reggio-Emilia, Parma, and Bologna. The Lambrusco grape has many mutations, with different strains taking root in different parts of the region, such as Lambrusco di Sorbara, which is unique to the area around Modena. One of the features of the Sorbara variety is its light, pinkish hue (most Lambrusco is ink-dark). Scents of white cherry, red currant, wild strawberry, white pepper, and herbs characterize this example from Zanasi, who ferment the wine “to order”: the juice is placed in a pressurized tank and the fermentation is arrested when the wine becomes slightly sparkling. Bone-dry, low alcohol, and sublimely refreshing, this is tailor-made for charcuterie plates and other apéritif applications. (NOTE: This wine does not carry a vintage date on the label, but could be labeled as 2019; fresh batches are made to order for the US importer.)

Northwestern Italy

Piedmont

Italy’s Piedmont region is really a wine “nation”unto itself, producing world-class renditions of every type of wine imaginable: red, white, sparkling, sweet...you name it! However, many wine lovers fixate on the region’s most famous appellations—Barolo and Barbaresco—and the inimitable native red that powers these wines:Nebbiolo.

Tuscany

Chianti

The area known as “Chianti” covers a major chunk of Central Tuscany, from Pisa to Florence to Siena to Arezzo—and beyond. Any wine with “Chianti” in its name is going to contain somewhere between 70% to 100% Sangiovese, and there are eight geographically specific sub-regions under the broader Chianti umbrella.
