Talmage, California is a long way from everything except Ukiah. In 1910, it might as well have been Topeka. But in 2025 it’s well-known that the Talmage Bench gravels are perfect Zin terroir. Even Napa’s vineyard guru, Andy Beckstoffer, bought land here.

Around 114 years ago, in this remote outpost of Mendocino County, the Giannecchini family planted their Zinfandel vineyard. The plants survived Prohibition by offering up grapes to home winemakers, and in the decades since, the family sold their massively concentrated, old-vine fruit to larger Sonoma County wineries, where it provided horsepower and bold blackberry liqueur in what were ultimately lesser wines.

Today the focus is squarely on this vineyard, farmed organically and regeneratively. As a single-vineyard wine, its old-vine richness commands a $50 price point from the winery. That’s not what you will pay.

Why You'll Love It

  • This Zinfandel has absolutely everything you want: penetrating, bold boysenberry and poached cherry fruit, lilting floral aromas, and spicy complexity.

  • It’s a wine produced without herbicides, insecticides, or inorganic fertilizer, with all weeding done by sheep. A 100% natural product.

How to Serve it

  • Drink now or within 2-3 years.

  • Serve in Bordeaux stems at 55°F, especially on a hot day.

  • Ultimate pairing: smoked beef short ribs with horseradish cream and/or hoisin-ginger barbecue sauce.
