Racines, Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay

We’re all guilty of walking past or overlooking something without noticing the beauty within, especially in the world of wine, where new labels pop up quicker and more frequently than blades of grass. Those who are unaware of Racines may think it’s just another Pinot Noir, but take a moment, and you’ll soon realize that this is one of California’s great hidden gems. Coming from the titanic partnership between Étienne de Montille of Burgundy’s legendary Domaine de Montille and Justin Willett of Santa Barbara’s high-profile Tyler Winery, Racines is all about showcasing the breathtaking beauty of Sta. Rita Hills in a traditional French style. Their Chardonnay, mostly from the organically farmed Wenzlau Vineyard (right across the way from the famed Sanford & Benedict Vineyard) ferments on native yeasts and matures in a combination of stainless steel and barrel. Étienne and Justin believe this is a wine that “best represents the potential of the region as a whole.” Taste it and you’ll see why everyone is buzzing about Sta. Rita Hills.

Valley is indeed compared favorably to Burgundy, Pinot Noir’s spiritual home. And while Pinot Noir accounts for 64% of Oregon’s vineyard plantings, there are cool-climate whites that must not be missed.

Santa Barbara

Among the unique features of Santa Barbara County appellations like Ballard Canyon (a sub-zone of the Santa Ynez Valley AVA), is that it has a cool, Pacific-influenced climate juxtaposed with the intense luminosity of a southerly
latitude (the 34th parallel). Ballard Canyon has a more north-south orientation compared to most Santa Barbara AVAs, with soils of sandy
clay/loam and limestone.

Paso Robles

Situated at an elevation of 1,600 feet, it is rooted in soils of sandy loam and falls within the Highlands District of the Paso Robles AVA.
