Quim Batlle, Foranell, Garnatxa Blanca, Alella DOC

The Quim Batlle winery is perched 1,000 feet above the city of Barcelona in the teensy appellation of Alella. Today, there are only eight registered producers in the DO, but vines have been cultivated from this high-altitude pocket of Catalonia, overlooking the Mediterranean, since the time of the Romans. Just fifteen minutes from the city, the steeply terraced vines are rooted in sauló, or granite and sand soil, which is well-draining and ensures this high-altitude site retains enough heat. Facing the Mediterranean, the vines are caressed with a unique, moderating breeze, which imparts a distinct flavor profile and lends this stunning wine its name.

The picturesque Quim Batlle estate, founded in 1999, is organically farmed and passionately focused on entirely white wine production. Crafted with a meticulous eye towards quality, the grapes are fermented with around fifteen hours of skin contact and are aged without oak influence. The wine matures on its fine lees for a full year prior to bottling. The finished masterpiece then ages for another full year before it is released on the market. The result is a full-bodied sensation of rich texture, savory complexity and inimitable Mediterranean terroir. If you enjoy full-bodied white wines, this is something you absolutely must try.

This wine displays a yellow golden core with light yellow reflections on the rim. Aromas of dried yellow apple, dried peach, a hint of preserved pineapple, melon rind and salt-preserved lemons leap from the glass and envelope the senses with savory notes of crushed grains, stirred lees, white mushroom powder, leavening bread dough and a hint of oyster shell. On the palate, this rich, full-bodied beauty permeates every crevice of the mouth with oily, fat texture that is balanced by bright, Mediterranean freshness and fine minerality. Layers of flavor including lemon rind, dried yellow apple and lemon pith unfold into an array of crushed, fresh seashells and stirred lees then crescendos into a fine, mineral-driven, thirst-quenching finish of refreshing acidity. Unlike any wine you will ever encounter again on the market, this is a wine that will send you wine geeks out there into orbit and charm traditionalists as well. A true chameleon, this wine uplifts numerous cuisines and will shine bright with this inspired, authentic Catalan Cod recipe.

Spain

Eastern Spain

Montsant

The Montsant DO is Priorat’s downslope neighbor in northeastern
Spain, but other than differences in altitude, there isn’t much else to tell their terroirs apart. Both appellations contain some of the world’s greatest old-vine Garnacha (Grenache) in soils of fractured granite and shale known locally as llicorella. It is a Mediterranean climate, with wide diurnal temperature swings.

Eastern Spain

Penedès

Technically, a wine labeled ‘Cava’ can be produced in several different regions, but Penedès, on Spain’s northern Mediterranean coast, is its
spiritual home. The climate is Mediterranean, the soils a favorable mix of limestone (key in pre-serving acids), sand, and clay, and Cava sparklers are crafted in the traditional ‘Champagne’ method. The traditional grapes used for Cava are Xarel-lo (cha-RAY-yo), Macabeu, and Parellada.

Northwestern Spain

Galicia

Galicia is lusher, colder, wetter, and greener than most of the rest of Spain, especially where wine-growing
is concerned. Viticulture up here is some of the most “heroic” in the world, as vineyards cling to impossibly steep slopes along snaking rivers such as the Miño and
the Sil. The influence of the Atlantic Ocean is profound, often lending wines a salty, “sea spray” character.
