2024 Bernabeleva, Camino de Navaherreros Blanco, Vinos de Madrid, Spain (October Club)

Bernabeleva stands as a pioneering force in the emerging Sierra de Gredos wine region, combining deep family heritage with cutting-edge winemaking focused on purity and site expression. Wines from Bernabeleva and other dedicated, locally focused producers are increasingly offering a compelling alternative to more established regions with a focus on old-vine Garnacha and indigenous whites that speak clearly of place and tradition.

Bernabeleva Camino de Navaherreros Blanco comes from the historic Bernabeleva estate, situated in San Martín de Valdeiglesias at the edge of Spain’s Sierra de Gredos mountains in Vinos de Madrid. Bernabeleva’s vineyards lie at high elevations on granitic sandy soils, with a climate marked by warm days and cool nights—conditions that favor freshness, elegance, and pronounced aromatics in the wines.

Bernabeleva was founded in 1923 by physician Vicente Álvarez-Villamil, the estate’s name means “bear’s forest,” a nod to ancient Celtic stone carvings found in the area. Bernabeleva’s modern legacy began in 2006 when Vicente’s great-grandchildren revived the dream of crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines from these unique vineyards. With the guidance of renowned winemakers such as Raúl Pérez and Marc Isart, Bernabeleva has become a leader in the Sierra de Gredos renaissance

Camino de Navaherreros Blanco is crafted from a blend of varieties— dominated by indigenous white grapes Albillo, Macabeo and other local varieties. Bernabeleva’s winemaking philosophy stresses low intervention, native yeast fermentation, and aging in large neutral wood to preserve natural aromatics and site specificity.

Aromas of honey, wild flowers, and stone fruit open the nose, followed by bright citrus notes like tangy lemon and juicy pineapple on the palate. It has a lively acidity balanced by a creamy texture, with a touch of minerality leaving a sense of freshness on the finish.
