Founded in 1820, Ameztoi stands as one of the ancestral pillars of Txakoli production in the Getariako Txakolina region of Spain’s Basque Country. Now in its fifth generation under winemaker Ignacio Ameztoi, the family has preserved centuries-old traditions while practically reinventing the category. Their estate vineyards, totaling some 40 hectares with an additional 10 hectares leased, are perched on the dramatic seaside cliffs overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. This extraordinary location combines steep southeast-facing slopes that absorb optimal sun exposure, intense coastal breezes and mineral-rich clay and sandy soils.
The family employs meticulous hand-harvesting and sustainable viticulture to farm old vine, indigenous grape varieties, primarily Hondarrabi Zuri with a small percentage of Hondarrabi Beltza. Low yields and rigorous canopy management foster concentrated fruit with vibrant acidity and intense minerality.
