The name “Marine Layer” honors the thick fog that cools the Sonoma Coast, a climate that produces wines with bright acidity, nuanced flavors, and balance. Marine Layer wines are known for their elegance and approachability, crafted with precision, creativity, and a deep respect for the environment and terroir.
The Sonoma Coast AVA stretches along the Pacific coastline in Sonoma County, featuring rugged hills and steep ridges. Its cool maritime climate is shaped by ocean fog and strong marine breezes, creating long, slow growing seasons. Fruit for this wine come from the Marine Layer Vineyard in Sebastopol Hills and select sites in the Green Valley and Petaluma Gap sub-AVAs.
Marine Layer Wines was founded by Baron Ziegler with winemaker Rob Fischer, who previously worked together at Banshee Wines. Their vision was to create a Sonoma Coast-focused brand sourcing grapes exclusively from the region’s best vineyards. They emphasize artisanal winemaking with a focus on sustainable farming, heritage clones, and hand harvesting.
The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted, then destemmed with about 35% whole clusters used. Fermentation is done with native yeasts, enhancing complexity. The wine ages 11 months in 25% new French oak barrels, imparting subtle structure and refinement while preserving bright fruit and fresh acidity. It is bottled unfined and lightly filtered.
The bouquet is bright and inviting with aromas of red cherries, cinnamon candy, fresh roses, and herbs. On the palate, it is juicy and fresh, with fine tannins and a refreshing, balanced finish. It offers both immediate approachability and the potential to age gracefully for 7-8 years.
