2021 La Granja Nuestra Senora de Remelluri, Rioja Blanco

Spain is often seen as a cauldron of world-class, age-worthy reds—but that’s only half the story. The 2021 Remelluri Blanco is a revelation: a wine that reshapes what white Rioja can be and demands a place on every serious collector’s radar. This is not a varietal showcase. It’s a terroir-driven masterpiece born from Telmo Rodríguez’s passion project—his answer to the great whites of Hermitage and Montrachet. Inspired by his formative years in France with legends like Gérard Chave and Château de Beaucastel, Telmo created a wine that speaks of soul, place, and precision.

What began as a quiet experiment—Telmo Rodríguez’s only outlet for creative expression at Remelluri—has since become a passionate pursuit of monumental greatness. Crafted from 8.66 hectares of high-altitude plots between 605 and 805 meters, the vineyards are co-planted with a diverse mix of white varieties. The farming is certified organic and biodynamic, with regenerative viticulture and horse-tended soils. Each plot is vinified separately using spontaneous fermentation in barrels, foudres, and concrete eggs, then aged in large neutral casks to preserve purity and texture. Yields are minuscule—just 12.2 hectoliters per hectare—ensuring that rarity is built into every bottle.

Critics have taken notice, and we concur. James Suckling awarded the 2021 Remelluri Blanco an astonishing 97 points, praising its “precise, flinty nose with seashell, oyster, white sesame, chalk and lime,” and calling it “textured, broad and long, with bright acidity and a precise, extremely long finish. Serious and gastronomic.” Luis Gutiérrez of Wine Advocate echoed the sentiment with his own 97-point review, highlighting its power, freshness, and low pH, and describing it as “the first wine that expresses the special character of the Remelluri property.”

Our Tasting Team had the privilege of opening a bottle at the office a few weeks ago, and it was a drop-the-mic moment. From the first pour, it was clear we were in the presence of a vinous marvel—one that radiates purity, tension, and breathtaking length. The wine’s layered complexity and mineral precision left us speechless.

Remelluri Blanco isn’t just a Spanish white—it’s a global benchmark. Rich, vibrant, and cellar-worthy, it’s the wine that proves white Rioja deserves the world’s respect. Coveted by collectors who chase Chave’s Hermitage Blanc and Domaine Leflaive’s Montrachet, this wine speaks the language of those who seek depth, longevity, and soul in their whites. Secure your allocation before it disappears into the cellars of those who already know.

¡Viva España!

Press Accolades:

97 Points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com:

  • “Such a precise, flinty nose with seashell, oyster, white sesame, chalk and lime. Textured, broad and long, with bright acidity and a precise, extremely long finish. Serious and gastronomic. A blend of 9 grapes.”

97 Points, Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate:

  • “The 2021 Blanco is a blend of varieties and places and is the first wine that expresses the special character of the Remelluri property. They used different vinification methods (concrete, foudre, barrique, all with indigenous yeasts), and the backbone here is the origin and not the process. It's not a shy white, showing power (14.14% alcohol) and the freshness of the altitude (605 to 805 meters above sea level) with a low pH (3.24). It comes from vines planted between 1989 and 2012 and is worked organically and biodynamically, with cover crops and horses. It has ripeness, notes of pollen and yellow fruit and a touch of smoke and spice, with a very balanced palate and great purity. It follows the path of elegance and freshness of the 2020, but it was a cooler and healthier vintage (in 2020, they had hail twice), and the wine shows more precision and finishes very clean. ”
