2023 Jean-Paul Dubost Beaujolais-Lantignié Rouge

Beaujolais legends like the Dutraive family, Domaine Burgaud, and Yann Bertrand have all extended their reach into the village of Lantignié. There’s a reason for that. Located just west of Regnie and Morgon, Gamay is planted here to the same pink quartz that dominates the best of Beaujolais’ ten named Crus.

And while a lot of famous outsiders have been drawn to Lantignié, Jean-Paul Dubost is a native of the place. He took over his family’s holdings in the mid-1990s and since then has been an ardent advocate for the village. Granite soils – the same that run through villages like Brouilly and Julienas – dominate here. Altitudes reach up to 500m, imbuing freshness to the rich power the granite soils encourage.

And Jean-Paul is dedicated to allowing Lantignié shine through unadorned: He started the conversion to organic farming and eliminated all pesticides in the vineyard. Cellar work is strictly hands-off, with spontaneous fermentations, semi-carbonic macerations, and very low sulfur levels. His wines are as clear a look into this special place as you could hope for.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Dubost’s Beaujolais-Lantignié hails from the family’s favorite plots around the village. There are high-elevation, granite-based components that bring lift, freshness, and structure. Lower sites with heavier clay soils contribute depth and richness.

  • The nose is wildly expressive, a panoply of crushed blackberry, red cherry, violets, sweet cinnamon spice, and sinewy minerality.

  • On the palate, it marries charm and seriousness in equal measure. Plush and ample, leaning into the purple fruits, before zippy acidity and light, polished tannins come in to freshen it up. It’s utterly delicious now, but it’ll also easily go three to five years in your cellar.

  • This is genuinely fantastic Beaujolais by any measure, but we’d be remiss not to mention the price. This is the ultimate Beaujolais value play.

How To Serve It

  • Serve slightly chilled; yes, it’s serious stuff, but it’s also incredibly refreshing!

  • We strongly suggest some Burgundy bowls here to appreciate the full range of aromatics on display.

  • You could definitely enjoy some Dubost on its own, but it’ll really shine next to some heartier and more rustic fare, like grilled sausage and puy lentils.
