Nestled in the mountainous Mandrolisai region in
central Sardinia, the vineyards that produce this
wine are as wild and untamed as the island itself.
Bush-trained (alberello) vines between 40 and
100 years old grow on steep slopes between 480
and 700 meters above sea level in volcanic, white
and pink granite-rich soils that impart a distinct
mineral character to the grapes. These ancient
plants yield small quantities of fruit with intensity
and complexity. Hot days followed by cool nights
preserve acidity while ripening the grapes to
perfection.
Hand-harvested in rugged terrain, Bovale Sardo
(Muristeddu), Cannonau and Monica grapes are
pressed in separate lots in antique wooden presses.
Natural fermentation occurs from native yeasts
in stainless steel tanks, allowing the wine to
retain its bright fruit flavors while showcasing the
unique characteristics of its terroir. Unlike most
red wines aged in oak barrels, “Garage” spends six
months aging exclusively in stainless steel tanks.
Bottled sans fining or filtration to preserve its raw
authenticity.
Three friends—Pietro Uras, Simone Murru, and
Renzo Manca— fueled by passion and rebellion
against industrial winemaking, are dedicated to
preserving Sardinia’s winemaking heritage while
embracing a modern artisanal approach. The
name, “I Garagisti,” reflects their humble beginnings
as “garage winemakers,” crafting small batches
with love and care. Sourcing exclusively from
their families’ vineyards, organically farming
and employing traditional methods, every step of
production is done by hand, even the use of oxen to
occasionally transport grapes from steep hillsides.
Vibrant and youthful with aromas of wild
strawberries, cherries, and Mediterranean herbs.
Dark red and jucy fruit burst on the palate with
balanced spice and minerality from its volcanic
soils. Bright and light bodied with firm structure
and supple tannins, this wine is youthful, complex
and juicy at the same time. Gulp this wine with
grilled meats like lamb or pork sausages for an
earthy complement—or serve it slightly chilled
alongside Mediterranean vegetable dishes like
melanzane alla Sassarese (grilled eggplant).
