2023 Thevenet & Fils Macon-Pierreclos Blanc

When legendary importer Neal Rosenthal first visited Jean-Claude Thévenet 43 years ago, the domaine was just short of 8 acres. But Rosenthal recognized something special: here was a family that didn't just grow grapes—they were nurserymen in the “sweet spot” town of Bussières, propagating the finest clonal material for estates across southern Burgundy.

Over four decades, the partnership between Rosenthal and the Thévenet family has weathered every vintage, market shift, and generational transition. When Jean-Claude passed away way too young in 2008, his wife Hélène and their three sons: Benjamin, Jonathan, and Aurélien—carried forward with the same zeal that made their father so respected. Today, the domaine spans 74 acres across Pierreclos and neighboring villages, with holdings in some of the Mâconnais’ top terroirs.

The grapes for this cuvée are sourced from four separate parcels within Pierreclos: “Margots,” “Le Château,” “Les Grands Buys,” and “La Bucherate.” The average age of the vines is a low-yielding 45 years. The vineyards come from rolling hills that face east, southeast and south: prime exposure. The wine is aged on its lees in tank and is NOT besmirched by oak. It’s just blossomy, citrusy, custardy, apply White Burg in all of its glory.

Why You'll Love It

  • Anomalous VALUE: While Pouilly-Fuissés are $40 and up, and routinely over $100, and village Puligny in a ridiculous stratosphere, this wine remains in an inexplicable eddy. It's the Michelin-level chef charging strip-mall bistro prices.

  • Pierreclos pedigree: Insiders know this town leads the pack out of 43 Mâconnais villages. When your neighbor Jean-Marie Guffens is commanding triple digits for similarly old vines and great terroirs, you’re getting way more wine than you’re paying for.

  • Unoaked window into great terroirs: Pure, laser-focused Chardonnay that lets the earth do all the talking in citrusy, apple-scented tones. The lees aging adds texture and complexity, enhancing the wine's chalky minerality.

How to Serve It

  • Serve cold and refreshing at 48°F in white wine stems.

  • Drink now through 2028—this will hold and improve for a few years.

  • This wine makes us daydream about Zuni’s Roast Chicken and Caesar Salad, or grilled monkfish with lemon beurre blanc.
