Clos Rougeard Saumur-Champigny, "Poyeaux"

Since the Foucault brothers first begin being whispered about by top French Sommeliers back in the late 1980s and ’90s they’re unparalleled takes on the wines of Saumur have become some of the most collectable and sought after bottles in the pantheon of “in-the-know” unicorns. These expressions of Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc are thrilling, age-worthy and profoundly complex. They are must haves for any serious French wine collection, and of course they are very limited.

"Poyeaux" is a single vineyard of 50 plus year old vines on sandy soils over a deep bed of pure tuffeau, or limestone chalk, directly adjacent to the estate's cellars in Chacé. The juice is fermented with native yeasts in open top concrete tanks and then aged in one year old barriques (seasoned by "Bourg") for 18 to 24 months. This is the most elegant, aromatic wine of the Rougeard line up and should be left to rest in the cellar for at least 5 to 10 years and ideally even longer.
