“Deux Flèches,” (Two Arrows) are responsible for this rising star of Beaujolais: Nicolas Chaffurin and Jeremy Pourrey, two buddies who—in between gastronomic adventures and fits of laughter—also teach winemaking at Lycée Lucie-Aubrac, a high school in Davayé, just north of Beaujolais. They’re beekeepers, committed to organic and biodynamic viticulture, and use a draught horse to plow their vineyards.
This wine comes from 80+ year old vines in “La Creuse Périlleuse,” or the spookily-named “Perilous Hollow,” in Saint-Amour, flecked with pink granite that is prevalent in Moulin-à-Vent and Fleurie but otherwise scarce in Saint-Amour. These old vines naturally have low yields that make for intense fruit flavors and fabulous concentration.
Why You’ll Love It:
An electric magenta in color, the wine boasts liqueur-like, flamboyant red fruit, full of life: look for red cherries, brambly jellied raspberry, and baking spices, all in an elegant and incredibly easy-to-drink package.
The comfort of a natural product: the wine is AB Certified Organic, with biodynamic practices. Their tractor has ears and a beating heart, and they only use sulfur in minimal amounts at bottling.
How to Serve it:
Drink now or in 3 years at 55°F in Burgundy bowls. Drink allegro, con brio.
Classic pairings: Pâté de Campagne, or Salade Lyonnaise with duck confit, bacon, frisée, and a runny egg.
