2018 Château Marquis de Terme, Margaux 4th Growth

The Margaux appellation produces Bordeaux's most graceful wines, and Marquis de Terme sits at its heart—literally and figuratively. The estate's origins trace to the 15th century, but it gained its current name in 1762 from François de Peguilhan, Marquis de Terme. Since 1935, the Sénéclauze family has kept watch over these precious 40 hectares, maintaining traditions while embracing modern precision.

The terroir shows classic Margaux typicité. Three distinct soil types are here: Peyrosols (classic gravel and pebbles), Luvisols (sand and gravel with clay particles for water retention), and Podzosols (leached soils that add aromatic complexity). It's this patchwork of soils, combined with 35-year-old vines, that gives Marquis de Terme its layered personality.

The 2018 vintage played perfectly into Margaux's strengths. A wet spring gave way to an exceptional summer—July and August brought sunshine and just enough heat to concentrate flavors without sacrificing freshness. The Indian summer that followed allowed for perfect ripening, particularly crucial for the 63% Cabernet Sauvignon that forms this wine's backbone.

In the cellar, respect for tradition meets thoughtful innovation. Parcel-by-parcel vinification in concrete, wood, and steel tanks preserves each plot's identity. Natural yeasts, no sulfites during fermentation, gravity-flow filling—every decision preserves the fruit's integrity. Sixteen months in French oak (50% new) adds structure without masking Margaux's inherent elegance.

The result is classic Margaux in full flower: blackcurrant and blackberry fruit wrapped in cocoa and clove, with filigreed tannins that make it so easy to drink this season.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT

Ready for the Roast Beast: While many 2018 Bordeaux still need years, this Margaux is singing right now. Decant it for an hour before dinner and prepare for it to steal the show.

96pt Vintage: 2018 was gorgeous on the Left Bank, with low yields and picked under sunny skies. Wine Spectator awarded the vintage 96 points because of wines like this.

4th Growth Pedigree: Classified in 1855 and still earning its ranking 170 years later. This is blue-chip Bordeaux at a price that is still 100% attainable. It defines affordable luxury.

Classic Margaux Breed and Elegance: If you love the silk-and-violets style of great Margaux—à la Palmer or Rauzan-Ségla—this delivers that delicacy and sweet fruit at a fraction of the price.

HOW TO SERVE IT

Decant 60-90 minutes before serving. This wine is approachable but still benefits from air. Serve at 60-62°F.

Drink now through 2038. While it's beautiful today, classified growth Bordeaux always rewards patience. Expect it to develop more savory, truffle notes over the next decade.

Perfect with prime rib, rack of lamb, or any Sunday roast. The silky tannins and fresh acidity also make it delightful with roasted root vegetables or mushroom Wellington.
