2018 Bruno by Karthauserhof, Riesling Spatlese

Karthäuserhofberg is a true national treasure of Germany. Founded by Carthusian monks in 1335, this monopole site in the iron-rich Eitelsbach valley produces some of Germany's most ageworthy Rieslings. The same family has owned it since Napoleon evicted the monks in 1811.

The 2018 vintage was exceptional for German Riesling—warm but not hot, with ideal ripening conditions that produced concentrated fruit with natural acidity. These barrels were originally destined to be Karthäuserhofberg Spätlese for the Russian market, which has long appreciated world-class German wine.

Then February 2022 happened. Rather than risk export complications or watch these wines age beyond their market window, Karthäuserhof made the pragmatic decision: declassify to Bruno, their more “entry-level” line, but the wine in the bottle is identical to their 2018 Spätlese. That makes it a fabulous bargain at this price.

Why You'll Love It

Perfect maturity: At seven years old, this Spätlese has hit its stride. The primary fruit has evolved into layered complexity while retaining vibrant acidity and juicy apricot, white rose, and green apple fruit. It's everything you want from aged German Riesling.

Grand Cru pedigree: Karthäuserhofberg is a Grosses Gewachs, the Ruwer’s Grand Cru that Scharzhofberger is to the Saar. The iron-rich slate imparts that distinctive crystalline minerality and intensity you simply can't replicate elsewhere.

Spätlese versatility: With residual sweetness balanced by racy acidity, this style works equally well as an aperitif, with food, or a treat on its own. It's Germany's most food-friendly wine category.

Cellar-worthy value: Drink it tonight or in 2045. Karthäuserhof Rieslings are built for the long haul, and at $26 per bottle on 6, you can afford to experiment with aging.

How to Serve It

  • Serve at 48-50°F in white wine glasses. Give it a few minutes in the glass to fully express itself.

  • Drink now through 2038.

  • Pairs beautifully with duck confit, pork schnitzel with apple compote, aged Gruyère, or spicy Asian cuisine where you need sweetness to balance heat.
