Hailing from one of the most revered traditional estates in the southern Rhône, established in 1850 and still family-run, currently by Dominique Ay and his children, Anne-Sophie and Christophe. The domaine covers 19 hectares in a single block of mid-slope vineyards just below the craggy Dentelles de Montmirail—the heart of Gigondas’ best terroir. Vines averaging 50–60 years old grow on clay-limestone and sandy soils, producing naturally low yields (about 35 hl/ha). The estate is distinctive for its dedication to a single wine, its flagship Gigondas, which has made Domaine Raspail-Ay one of the appellation’s benchmarks.
The blend is typically 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre, hand-harvested, fermented in concrete vats, and aged 18–24 months in large, old oak foudres to preserve purity and terroir expression.
The 2022 vintage reflects the Raspail-Ay style at its most refined: ripe, full-bodied, and elegant, balancing Gigondas’ natural power with structure and freshness. The bouquet opens with dark cherries, wild berries, violets, and gentle spice, leading into a palate of fleshy fruit framed by firm yet polished tannins. Layered notes of pepper, lavender, and garrigue add complexity, while the limestone soils impart a cool mineral thread that runs through the finish. Built for both immediate enjoyment and long-term evolution in the cellar.
