2009 Château Vannières, Bandol Rouge

This library vintage Château Vannières has been slumbering at the winery for its entire life until this past Spring. We have had great success offering other vintages over the years, and they’re a marvelous testimony of how well these Mourvèdre-dominated Provencal blends can age, putting most mature Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux to shame.

This is a rare, soul-stirring Mourvèdre (95%) and Grenache (5%) blend from the 474-year-old cellars of Château Vannières. Experiencing Vannières’ haunting and wonderfully complex back-vintage releases will amaze you. Aside from drawing immediate comparisons to the finest labels of Bordeaux and Barolo, it’s their youthful vigor and staying power. It has brooding intensity and profound complexities that you will not find in an older Châteauneuf-du-Pape that incorporates the same varietals blend but just flipped.

Château Vannières dates back to the mid-1500s and crafts traditionally made old-school Bandol. It starts with low yields, a long and slow vinification process, a 35-day punch-down regimen, and nearly two years of maturation in large foudres and barrels. Great vintages spend two to three decades resting in their dark, cool, ancient cellars.

The wine can certainly take a proper decant. They open up and evolve in your glass over an evening. Embrace notes of dried black cherry, black raspberry, and crème de cassis on the nose, followed by a wave of licorice, crushed black rock, green olive, charred violet, vintage horse saddle, smoke, tar, garrigue, and hints of exotic spice. This effort is meaty and dark-fruited with an intense push-pull of savoriness and minerality. They are balanced by matured tannins
