2022 Domaine Maestracci, Vin de Corse-Calvi "Clos Reginu"

If you’re in the mood for a wine that’s as unique as it is delicious, today’s Niellucciu-dominant red from Corsica’s Reginu plateau is calling your name. Niellucciu, the Corsican name for Sangiovese, is believed to have been brought to the island by Genoese rulers in the late 18th century. This grape thrives in Corsica’s rugged terroir, producing wines with the bright acidity of Chianti but with a wild, meaty edge that’s distinctly Corsican. Often blended with the native grape Sciaccarellu, Niellucciu plays a key role in the island’s appellation contrôlée reds and rosés. This fresh, energetic wine also has some serious depth and complexity, offering a true taste of the island’s rugged beauty. We love everything about Corsican wine, except the price tag (it’s expensive to get wines off this island!), but with a sub $30 price tag Domaine Maestracci’s "Clos Reginu" bucks that trend, providing a layered, complex red at a value that’s hard to beat. Grab a few bottles and experience the essence of this remarkable place!

Domaine Maestracci is a renowned estate located in the heart of Corsica, on what is known as the Reginu plateau. Just minutes from the Mediterranean but seemingly worlds away, the vineyard is shielded by craggy hills and the towering Monte Grossu. Founded in the early 20th century, Domaine Maestracci has a rich history of producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of Corsica. The property was a former olive oil mill and production facility before the owner closed up and moved his operation to Algeria. In 1945 Roger Maestracci purchased the property and converted the oil press and storage area into a wine cellar, and planted vines throughout the property. He surmised that the vineyard’s granitic soils were ideal for cultivating Niellucciu, a grape that buds early and ripens late, making it susceptible to late frosts but capable of developing incredible complexity.

Today Roger’s granddaughter Camille-Anaïs Raoust is at the helm, and her dedication to quality and deep connection to the land is evident in every bottle. The farming is now certified biodynamic and organic, and Camille’s approach to winemaking honors traditional methods while embracing modern techniques to ensure the wine’s freshness and vitality. This Niellucciu-dominant red is a testament to the estate’s ability to produce wines that are not only delicious but also deeply expressive of Corsica’s unique identity.

The challenging conditions of the Reginu plateau contribute to a wine that is both fresh and robust, embodying the untamed nature of the landscape. The wine offers a captivating mix of flavors, with bright citrus and red fruit layered with smoky, earthy undertones. A brambly character adds depth, while the savory, herbal notes of Corsica’s unique terroir shine through. This complexity makes the wine a versatile pairing for grilled meats, a charcuterie board, a simple tomato-based pasta, or aged cheeses. Serve it a bit on the cool side, around 55-60 degrees, in a Burgundy stem to unlock the full range of aromas and flavors. This is a perfect wine for the coming transition from summer to fall, and given the exceptional value you should definitely stock up.
