Randy Dunn, a graduate of University of California, Davis, and previous winemaker for Caymus and Pahlmeyer, to name a couple, never crafts wine for mere scores. He consistently captures the old world elegance of Bordeaux with the essence of Napa’s inimitable Howell Mountain appellation. With immaculate fruit sourced from in and around the Howell Mountain AVA, the altitude and soil deliver unrivaled examples of harmonious acidity, structure and complexity that capture the charm and elegance of the old world with the unique essence of the California mountains. A few years back, I was fortunate enough to attend a twenty-year vertical of Dunn’s wines with some of the top sommeliers in California. Every vintage was phenomenal, even from difficult years, thanks to Dunn’s restrained, balanced approach, which delivers timeless, age-worthy wines of unparalleled elegance and harmony that has become hard to come by in California.
These wines have been meticulously stored since they were first shipped directly from Dunn upon release. When we pulled the cork on these mid-90’s examples, the cork looked like it had a mere three years of age on it with a stained dark purple edge that measures approximately 1/10 of an inch. These are the most pristine examples you will ever encounter which have layered flavors akin to top Bordeaux. His “Napa Valley” Cabernet Sauvignon we are offering are derived from his lower altitude vineyards on Howell Mountain and the Napa Valley floor. An example of Cabernet that was built to last, these wines are incomparable snapshots of what Napa is truly capable of when crafted with an eye toward tradition and balance.
