2022 Jean-Philippe Fichet, Bourgogne Blanc

Fans of a lean, taut, mineral-driven white Burgundy listen up: Jean-Philippe Fichet’s Bourgogne Blanc is a wine you need to know. Jean-Philippe has quietly risen to the upper echelons of winemakers in Meursault over the past couple of decades. Or, we should say he was quietly rising, but since about the 2019 vintage the press and Burgundy lovers around the globe have been paying close attention to the exceptional quality that Fichet consistently achieves. As such the wines are now very limited and highly allocated. And this is no ordinary Bourgogne; it’s crafted from vines just outside the Meursault appellation, bringing a level of sophistication and complexity that is rare for its category. Fichet's meticulous approach to winemaking shines here, playing perfectly with the warm, sunny 2022 vintage and offering a wine that punches well above its weight. We have just a few cases of the Bourgogne Blanc, so don’t miss out on this chance to score some top tier white Burgundy.

BONUS: We have miniscule amounts of Fichet’s Meursualt and Rully Blanc too. These are highly collectable wines that are worthy of the most discerning Burgundy aficionado’s cellar for sure. Click HERE to grab a couple bottles before they’re long gone.

Jean-Philippe got his start in the 1980s, but after he lost access to almost all of his vineyards he did a hard reset in the 1990s and secured some prized parcels for the long term so he wouldn’t have to worry about having a pristing fruit every vintage. He’s in the same stylistic camp as his famous neighbors Dominique Lafon and Jean-Marc Roulot, though his wines tend to be a bit less reductive out of the gate. As he will tell you, Meursault’s unique terroir supplies all the weight and richness, and his job is to show restraint and achieve excellent balance. We think he does so in spades, with wines that display vibrant citrus notes, layered with a slightly smoky edge due to the touch of reduction. This style not only enhances its complexity but also ensures the wine’s longevity, making it a bottle that can be enjoyed now or tucked away in your cellar for up to a decade.

The vineyards that produce this Bourgogne Blanc are a stone's throw from the Meursault boundary, and you can taste the influence. Jean-Philippe treats this wine the same as his top tier cuvées, aging in mostly neutral French oak barrels for 12 months and then back into steel tanks to settle naturally for several months before bottling. The result is a wine of characteristic tension and energy, with just the right balance of richness and brightness. Fichet’s attention to detail in the vineyard and cellar is evident in every sip, from the clean, focused fruit to the long, flinty finish. Indeed, what makes Fichet’s Bourgogne Blanc truly special is how it captures the essence of its terroir without the Premier Cru price tag.

Since Jean-Philippe treats his Bourgogne like a Premier Cru Meursualt, you should too! Serve it cool, not cold, in a large Burgundy stem, and unlock a cornucopia of crunchy fruit–green and yellow apple, just-ripe pear, Meyer lemon–and savory complexity–marzipan, white flowers, orange blossom, sea salt. It’s a classic bottle for an herb roasted chicken or more robust fish like halibut and swordfish, and of course a lobster roll would do the trick quite nicely! So whether you’re a seasoned Burgundy aficionado or just starting your journey into the world of fine wine, this Bourgogne Blanc is a must-try. Its lean, taught style offers a pure expression of Burgundy’s potential, making it a perfect introduction to the region’s magic. Stock up while you can—wines like this don’t stay under the radar for long.
