From among the most historic and desired vineyards in Germany, the famed Saarburger Rausch, produced by Weingut Dr. Wagner, delivers a luxurious wine of pitch-perfect acidity, minerality and balance. This Spätlese encapsulates why off-dry Riesling from the Mosel has garnered the reputation as the nectar of the Gods.
This wine is representative of one of the most classic, beloved styles at its absolute pinnacle. Although NOT a dessert wine, this slightly sweet charmer is a food pairing wonder that will elevate spicy Thai or Cantonese cuisine to heavenly heights.
Until recently, the Mosel region of Germany was known by the name, ‘Mosel-Saar-Ruwer.’ The sheer majesty of this region’s beauty is truly awe-inspiring. Near vertical vineyards ascend from the gleaming sliver of winding water at dizzying heights that make you wonder how Mother Nature could conjure something so severe yet lovely – then the mind is struck by the daunting task that makes viticulture in this surreal place possible. This wine is derived from the Saar portion of the region, named after the Saar River, which is a tributary of the Mosel. The history of vine cultivation in the Saar reaches back to roughly 2,000 years ago. Among the most important vineyards in the Mosel is this Saarburger Rausch, which is shared among three families.
The Dr. Wagner estate was founded in 1880 by Josef Heinrich Wagner. Over the decades, they have weathered two world wars and have continued to keep tradition and their holdings in the family. Christiane Wagner is the 5th generation steward currently at the helm of the family estate. The predominantly old-vine sites are worked and harvested manually with meticulous care. Their Saarburger Rausch parcel lies in one of the most historic and important vineyards in Germany. Rooted in weathered, blue Devonian slate soils at a 30-60% incline, these vines are impossible to work by machine and offer one of the most stunning vineyard sites in the world. The wine is fermented in traditional neutral casks in the historic cellar, which is the largest vaulted cellar in the Saar. The resulting wine delivers the perfect amount of residual sugar, which is swiftly cleansed by bright acidity and the enchanting journey of concentrated fruit, varietal purity and slate minerality that leaves you with a taste experience you will never forget.
The 2009 Saarburger Rausch displays a concentrated golden straw core with a hint of green on the edge of the glass. Generous aromatics of yellow mango, dried lemon, a touch of candied grapefruit peel, white cherry and dried apricot are infused with a complex array of lime blossoms, classic petrol, honey, saffron and honeysuckle that will leave your sense memory with a fragrance unlike anything else in the world. The off-dry palate is rich in texture and layered with luxurious flavors of preserved peach, apricot, mango and honey that are harmoniously balanced by fresh acidity and blue slate minerality for an overwhelmingly delicious sensory narrative. This is simply a perfect expression of off-dry Riesling that will reveal one of the most unforgettable gastronomic experiences of your life when paired with a spicy Asian meal. This wine will entrance with anything from spicy chicken larb, Thai salads or an array of Cantonese dishes, but we highly recommend this
