Domaine Vacheron is advantageously perched along the hillside of the ancient medieval village of Sancerre. Situated on the eastern edge of the appellation, this Domaine’s precise spot features Silex soils over limestone and is closer to the region of Burgundy than the rest of the Loire Valley. The Silex soils are comprised of an exceptional combination of flint and sandstone that lies over a bed of limestone. Thanks to these unique factors, the incredibly old Pinot Noir vines nourished in these soils that are responsible for today’s rosé could easily produce high-end bottles of red wine, but they are purposefully transformed into rosé - not merely a byproduct of red wine production. Domaine Vacheron farms their vines with strict organic and biodynamic practices. It seems this direction, certified in 2003 and 2004, has led to even more pronounced characteristics of the terroir in the estates’ wines with a profound level of energy and focus. This 2015 rosé is a striking example that beautifully transmits the essence of the silex soils and limestone that we all crave in anything from Sancerre. They plow the soils, fertilize with natural compost, plant cover crops between the rows of vines, and hand harvest extremely small yields.
In charge of this artisanal operation and family legacy are third-generation winemakers, vignerons and cousins, Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron, who took the reigns of the world-famous domaine from their fathers. After extensive study around the world, the cousins returned to their hometown and their family’s winery. When they took over, their priority was to implement organic and biodynamic farming methods in the vineyards. While their fathers had always practiced natural winemaking techniques, it was the cousins who pushed for organic and biodynamic certification. After the vines for this 100% Pinot Noir are hand-harvested, the wine is aged in climate-controlled stainless steel for four months before bottling. We are completely enamored with the result year after year, and this 2015 vintage is a standout. This flawless wine of tension and precise-minerality is everything we crave in a high-end rosé.
The 2015 Vacheron Rose exhibits a bright, pale light salmon core with pink reflections on the rim. The tense, mineral-driven nose is alive with aromas of fresh strawberry, pomegranate, green plum, grapefruit pith, wet roses, fresh wild herbs and cut grass alongside oyster shell and finely crushed minerals. The palate is incredibly bright with high acid and precise minerality. Aromas are reminiscent of the nose with flavors of tart cherry, pomegranate, rhubarb, hibiscus and kaffir lime leaf, all of which are so compact and focused that the experience seems to linger infinitely. Like any great wine, regardless of color, this rose is an age-worthy wine that will begin to truly hit its sweet spot 12-18 months.
