Maison Roland Thévenin, Chorey-les-Beaune, 'Les Beaumonts'

Chorey-lès-Beaune is situated between Aloxe-Corton and Savigny-Lès-Beaune, just north of Beaune. The appellation, first granted AOC status in 1970, is permitted to produce red and white wine. Although most of the delineated area lie on flatland below RN74, this wine's particular vineyard, “Les Beaumonts,” is perched above that ever-important line and is encroaching on some of the most prized vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. The brightest star of the appellation, Les Beaumonts is named for its beautiful location and ideal exposure to the sun. Apparently, this vineyard dates back to ancient times and rests alongside an old Roman road where numerous medals and remnants of the ancient empire have been excavated. Today, this celebrated vineyard produces Pinot Noir of more depth, structure and complexity than any wine of the Chorey-Lès-Beaune appellation.

In the hands of Maison Roland Thévenin, this unique vineyard reaches its pinnacle. Famed Burgundian bon vivant, Roland Thévenin was not only a leader of one of the most important merchant houses in Burgundy, but he was also a celebrated writer, politician and winemaker in the most traditional sense. During his lifetime, between 1905 and 1990, Monsieur Thévenin brought fine Burgundy to the rest of the world and only elevated the quality that could be derived from lesser-known appellations like Chorey-Lès-Beaune. Terroir-driven, classic examples are still produced under his name with the incredible dedication to excellence that made his house famous. With organic and biodynamic fruit, the winemaking team of revered Gregory Patriant and Pierre Vincent deliver wine that is traditionally crafted and derived from carefully chosen sites. This wine is no exception; phenomenal at the moment, it will easily evolve into a rare treasure in your cellar.

The 2012 Les Beaumonts displays a dark ruby red core with slight pink and garnet reflections on the rim. The enchanting nose is a paradigm for classic Burgundy with aromas of red cherry, underripe strawberry, hibiscus and rose petal over savory aromatics of wet mushroom, exotic spices, wet herbs, damp leaves and forest floor. The palate is medium-plus in body and boasts substantial depth, immense structure and ample minerality for a village level lieu-dit. Freshly picked red fruits are perfumed with wet roses and forest floor then evolve into significant minerality for a lingering, classic finish. This wine is lovely at the moment but will start to reveal its true beauty in another 1-2 years and will hit the ultimate sweet spot between its 6th and 10th birthday. For those of you who would like to enjoy this wine in its youth, simply decant for 30 minutes and serve in Burgundy stems at cellar temperature. Enjoy alongside this Burgundian braised rabbit in mustard sauce and delight in what the night has in store.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
