Fabrice et Valérie Closset, Champ Divin, Chardonnay

Perched along the “premier plateau” of the Jura, Fabrice et Valérie Closset nurture their treasured five-hectares with organic and biodynamic viticulture. The husband and wife team aptly named their estate Champ Divin, which translates to “Divine Estate.”  A natural fit for this endeavor in myriad ways, they bring an agronomy and earth sciences background to their work and they have dedicated years toward sustainable farming practices and natural balance of the earth from Africa to the Loire Valley before settling in the bucolic Jura. The result is a wine of incredible purity that is teeming with alpine life and energy. Today’s Chardonnay is derived from the Jura’s “first plateau,” and is rooted in clay-limestone topsoil over limestone and silica bedrock. They harvest all of their fruit exclusively by hand and gently press it before fermentation with indigenous yeast. The wine is fermented and aged in wood, primarily used barrique and demi-muids. Thanks to their organic and biodynamic farming as well as natural winemaking techniques, this wine is full of life and encapsulates what makes Jura a rising star in French wine.

This 2014 Chardonnay displays a light yellow, golden core with green reflections at the rim. The generous nose is reminiscent of a young Puligny-Montrachet or Meursault with aromas of bright yellow apple and white peach laced with lemon blossoms, spun honey and a pleasing hint of rising bread dough. The medium-bodied palate has a creamy density harmoniously balanced by a heavenly lift from the bright acidity. Boasting additional flavors of subtle tropical and stone fruit, lemon zest, honeycomb, wild mountain herbs and crushed white chalk, the entry is mouth coating and generous but finished is by satisfying brightness and stunning minerality. An incredible value for the quality found in the bottle, this wine is lovely now but will be simply breathtaking if aged for 3-4 years or even a decade. Simply decant for thirty minutes and serve in Burgundy stems at cellar temperature for optimal results.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
