Champagne Guy de Forez, Les Riceys, Brut Reserve

Guy de Forez is from the village of Riceys in the Aube, one of the five main regions of Champagne. Riceys actually rests only a couple kilometers away from the border of Burgundy. Thanks to its close proximity, the soil resembles that of Chablis more than the rest of Champagne. Boasting Portlandian and Kimmeridgian limestone, the minerality of these wines is truly remarkable and this bottling exhibits an extremely pure expression of its terroir. Purity of terroir is not the only asset to be found at Guy de Forez; the winery, nestled in a 17th century estate, looks out over the vineyard that Sylvie Wenner’s grandfather planted back in the 50’s. Sylvie and Francis Wenner now run the family operation with a respect for history and tradition while continually pursuing progressive initiatives in the vineyard and the winery. Guy de Forez was one of the first wineries in the region to look toward sustainability and many have followed suit. They began farming lutte raisonée, then decided to push the envelope even further. They have championed the government’s Ecophyto plan to reduce chemicals in farming practices throughout France and have recently obtained Terra Vitis Certification, which has done a tremendous amount to protect the environmental heritage of the land and the vine. This pursuit of purity and excellence is certainly reflected in the glass. The magnificent Guy de Forez Brut Reserve is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, aged in stainless steel with 10 grams per liter of dosage. All of the fruit for this bottling is from the near perfect 2010 vintage, although the wine is not vintage dated.

This Champagne has a light golden yellow color and offers powerful aromas of dried yellow apple, lemon, beeswax, freshly baked brioche and fresh cream. The palate delivers yellow apple, lemon zest, honey, brioche and stunning, crushed oyster shell minerality. The finish delivers the perfect mouthfeel with ample creaminess, weight, excellent acidity and fine-beaded bubbles. This family owned operation is very small production and only a tiny amount makes it into the United States. Again, as I always say, Champagne made in this style is best served in an all purpose white wine stem, or even a Burgundy stem. If you have large open Champagne stems, those work great, but never use a tall thin flute if you want to smell the complexities in the glass.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
