Domaine de la Monardière, Les 2 Monardes, Grenache Blend

Domaine La Monardière is a family estate in the Southern Rhône, producing alluring wines with unique authenticity that are true to the terroir in which the vineyards are grown. In a region that is home to many producers who sell their grapes, Domaine La Monardière focuses on producing wines strictly from their estate-grown grapes while not selling any of the grapes to outside producers. The estate was founded in 1987 by Martine and Christian Vache, and dedicated to the the purity of the land, they set out to produce honest wines of the AOC. They strictly use natural farming practices, gaining full organic certification in 2010, though having implemented organic practices since as early as 2000. The forty year old Grenache (70%) and Syrah (30%) vineyards from which this wine is made are planted in chalky grit and say clay soils, producing very low yields of concentrated fruit. The grapes are harvested manually, destemmed, and then strictly fermented with only native yeasts, before being aged for one year in tanks in a combination of tanks and barrels. The wine is not fined or filtered before being bottled, which perseveres the natural purity of the wine in its most sincere form.

The 2012 Les 2 Monardes has a dark ruby core with illustrious purple reflections throughout the glass. The nose is riddled with juicy, ripe aromas of Kirsch liqueur, cassis, dried black cherries, garrigue, white pepper, fresh wild flowers, crushed stones and a touch of olive. The palate mirrors the nose with additional notes of orange peel, black and red berry liqueur, balanced by rocky minerality, pepper and meat driving the incredibly long finish. This wine is absolutely delicious, but does need a bit of decanting; please decant this for 30-45 minutes and then serve in large Burgundy stems—my personal preference—though it would also show well in large Bordeaux stems. Although this wine is fantastic now, if you wait 3 to 5 years, the fruit will fall away and the floral and savory characteristics will come to the forefront.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
